Kinloch Distillery was a Scotch whisky distillery located in Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland. It was founded in 1824 and closed in 1926, with its buildings demolished two years later. Kinloch was one of roughly thirty distilleries that once operated in Campbeltown during the town's heyday as the self-proclaimed "whisky capital of the world," and its closure was part of the broader collapse of the Campbeltown whisky industry in the 1920s.
Kinloch Distillery was built in 1824 for the partnership of Lamb, Colville & Co. Co-founder Robert Lamb died in 1826 and was succeeded by Robert Ralston. On 25 April 1875, a fire broke out in a building that had previously served as the distillery's malting house, threatening the racking room and spirit store; workers managed to remove the whisky from the racking store moments before the roof collapsed. In 1919 the distillery was acquired by West Highland Malt Distilleries Limited, a company formed to consolidate several Campbeltown distilleries, but that company went into liquidation in 1923. Kinloch was then purchased by Duncan MacCallum, who kept it in production until 1926.
Kinloch ceased production in 1926 amid the wider collapse of the Campbeltown whisky trade, a downturn driven by decades of high-volume, lower-quality output, the loss of the American export market during Prohibition, and the broader economic slump of the 1920s. Many Campbeltown distilleries closed within a few years of one another during this period, and Kinloch's buildings were demolished in 1928, leaving little physical trace of the site today. As with most of Campbeltown's vanished distilleries, no verified original Kinloch bottlings are known to survive in the collector's market; the distillery's history is documented mainly through local records and contemporary newspaper accounts such as the report of its 1875 fire.
