Kintyre Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery that once operated in Campbeltown, on the Kintyre peninsula, Scotland. It was built in 1830 for John Ross & Co and remained in production, on and off, until it closed in 1921. Like many of the town's once-numerous malt distilleries, it did not survive Campbeltown's early-20th-century industry collapse and today exists only in historical record.
Kintyre Distillery was established in 1830 by John Ross & Co, during the period when Campbeltown was rapidly building a reputation as one of Scotland's most concentrated whisky-producing towns, eventually home to over thirty distilleries. Documented incidents from the distillery's operating history illustrate the hazards of Victorian-era distilling: in 1870 a stillman was charged with culpable homicide after releasing hot water from a boiler into a mash tun while a maltman was working inside a washback, and in 1876 an excise officer died after falling into a copper full of boiling water and being severely scalded.
In March 1875, the distillery was completely destroyed by fire, a fate that befell several Campbeltown distilleries of the era. It was evidently rebuilt or returned to operation afterward, since production continued into the following decades before the site finally closed in 1921. No detailed records of later ownership changes, production capacity, or still configuration have survived in the available historical sources.
Kintyre Distillery closed in 1921, part of the broader wave of closures that reduced Campbeltown from over thirty working distilleries in its Victorian heyday to just two by the mid-20th century. No records of the site's later use or demolition date are documented in available sources, and no confirmed surviving bottlings from Kintyre Distillery are known to exist today, making it one of the region's least-documented "lost" distilleries. Modern references to Kintyre in whisky generally point instead to the wider Kintyre peninsula, home to today's surviving Campbeltown distilleries such as Springbank and Glen Scotia.
