Knockdhu Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located at Knock, near Huntly, in the north-east of Scotland. It was founded in 1893 and is currently owned by Inver House Distillers, part of International Beverage Holdings (Thai Beverage plc). Its single malt is sold under the brand name anCnoc rather than the distillery's own name, to avoid confusion with the nearby Knockando distillery.
Knockdhu was built in 1893-94 by John Morrison, who bought the Knock estate from the Duke of Fife after springs of pure water were found on the southern slope of Knock Hill. The site was chosen for its abundant water supply, its proximity to barley-growing farmland and peat, and its position beside Knock Station on the Great North of Scotland Railway's Aberdeen-to-Elgin line, which allowed easy transport of casks. The distillery was built from local grey granite and was originally intended to supply malt whisky for blending into Haig's. It ran continuously until 1930, when the Depression forced a lengthy closure; it reopened in 1933 and continued production, with a spell in the hands of Distillers Company Limited (DCL) and its successors, until it was mothballed again in 1983. In 1988 Knockdhu was bought by the independent Scottish firm Inver House Distillers, and production resumed in February 1989. In 1994 the single malt was renamed anCnoc (Scottish Gaelic for "the hill") to distinguish it clearly from Speyside's Knockando. The distillery is one of the smallest and most traditional working Highland malt distilleries, still run largely by hand with its original two stills.
Knockdhu sits close to the boundary between the Speyside and Highland whisky-producing regions. It was long described informally as a Speyside distillery, but Inver House repositioned anCnoc as a Highland malt, and the Scotch Whisky Regulations of 2009 formally redrew the Speyside boundary along electoral ward lines, placing Knockdhu just outside it. It is therefore now officially classified as a Highland (Eastern Highlands) distillery.
The single malt is bottled under the anCnoc name rather than as "Knockdhu". The core range centres on age-statement expressions matured mainly in ex-bourbon American oak casks, known for a light, fruity, non-chill-filtered style: anCnoc 12 Year Old (43% ABV), anCnoc 18 Year Old (46% ABV) and anCnoc 24 Year Old (46% ABV), alongside peated expressions such as anCnoc Peatheart and occasional vintage and sherry-cask-finished limited releases.
