Kythe Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located at Hills of Bendochy Farm, near Coupar Angus in Perthshire, in the Highland region of Scotland. It was founded in 2025 and is currently owned by an independent, globally-funded consortium of whisky enthusiasts chaired by Aaron Chan. Housed in converted farm buildings with no visitor centre or gift shop, Kythe was built to revive the "old style" of Highland single malt production that largely disappeared from Scotland after the 1960s.
The idea for Kythe was first conceived in 2014 by distillery manager Jonny McMillan and whisky maker Angus MacRaild, two lifelong friends united by a shared fascination with pre-1960s Scotch whisky - the waxy, characterful spirit style largely lost to industry-wide efficiency drives from the 1960s onward. The project was formally established as Kythe Distillery in 2022, funded entirely by a group of whisky enthusiasts around the world through a Cask Owners' Programme rather than institutional investment, under the chairmanship of Hong Kong-based independent bottler Aaron Chan (founder of the Club Qing bottling label), with Scotch whisky industry veteran Ronnie Cox serving as Brand Director Emeritus. Construction of the distillery, built within pre-existing agricultural buildings on a working farm at Hills of Bendochy near Coupar Angus, was completed in summer 2025, with the first distilling runs beginning later that year. Kythe deliberately eschews modern efficiency-driven distilling practice: it uses heritage barley varieties, ferments for more than two weeks in wooden washbacks with traditional brewer's yeast, and runs a directly wood-fired wash still - understood to be the only still of its kind currently operating in Scotland - paired with an electrically heated spirit still, both fitted with worm-tub condensers. The site is designed to produce around 50,000 litres of pure alcohol a year, enough to fill roughly 250 casks, and runs on renewable electricity that its owners say cuts carbon emissions by around 94% versus a comparable kerosene-fired distillery. As of 2026, Kythe's spirit remains maturing in refill casks and no whisky has yet been released for sale; cask ownership is offered directly to private buyers and independent bottlers through the distillery itself.
Kythe has not yet released any whisky: its first spirit only began running off the stills in 2025 and remains in cask, maturing towards the minimum three years required before it can legally be sold as Scotch whisky. In the meantime, the distillery offers cask ownership through its Cask Owners' Programme, allowing private collectors and independent bottlers to purchase individual casks of new-make spirit directly. No core range of bottled expressions exists yet, with early releases expected once the first casks reach maturity.
