Ladyburn Distillery — Lowland Single Malt Whisky

Ladyburn Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery that was located within the Girvan distillery complex near Girvan, South Ayrshire, Lowland, Scotland. It was founded in 1966 by William Grant & Sons and was closed in 1975. Its entire single malt output was intended for blending, giving Ladyburn one of the shortest operating lives and smallest surviving stocks of any Scotch malt distillery.

History

Ladyburn was built in 1966 by William Grant & Sons as a small malt whisky distillery set within the grounds of their much larger Girvan grain distillery (established 1963) in South Ayrshire. The distillery was equipped with two wash stills and two spirit stills and drew process water from the Penwapple Reservoir. Unlike most Lowland malt distilleries of the era, Ladyburn was never intended to produce a standalone single malt brand; its spirit was earmarked almost entirely for use in William Grant & Sons' blended whiskies, such as Grant's.

Closure & Legacy

Ladyburn operated for less than a decade before William Grant & Sons closed the malt distillery in 1975, folding its production needs back into the wider Girvan site; the distillery buildings were demolished in 1976. Because so little Ladyburn spirit was ever laid down and even less was bottled as single malt, surviving casks are extremely scarce. Independent bottlers, including Signatory Vintage and Wilson & Morgan, have released small quantities of the remaining stock, sometimes under the regional name "Ayrshire" rather than Ladyburn. Original Ladyburn bottlings are now highly prized by collectors: a 1966-vintage bottle sold at auction in December 2021 for more than £80,000, reflecting the distillery's rarity rather than any wide reputation, since almost no consumers ever tasted it as an official single malt in its own era.
