Lagg Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located near the village of Lagg on the south coast of the Isle of Arran, in the Islands region of Scotland. It was founded in 2019 and is currently owned by Isle of Arran Distillers Ltd, the same independent, shareholder-owned company behind the Arran distillery at Lochranza. Lagg was purpose-built to produce heavily peated single malt, giving the company a smoky counterpart to Lochranza's traditionally unpeated style.
Lagg takes its name from a distillery that operated briefly at the same southern end of Arran in the early 19th century before closing in 1837, making it the island's most recent legally licensed distillery prior to the modern revival. Planning permission for the new distillery was granted in August 2016 and construction began that October, with production starting in April 2019 and the visitor centre opening to the public on 1 July 2019. The building, designed by Denham Benn Architects, features a distinctive green roof and a panoramic visitor centre overlooking the Firth of Clyde, and was conceived from the outset as a dedicated home for Arran's peated whisky. The first official bottlings, a small-batch trio marking the distillery's inaugural release, arrived in 2022, and Lagg has since built out a core range while its spirit continues to mature.
Lagg's whiskies are made from heavily peated malted barley (around 50 ppm phenols), distinguishing them from the unpeated house style of sister distillery Arran. The core range centres on the Kilmory edition, matured in ex-bourbon casks and bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered. Limited and cask-finished releases, such as the sherry-influenced Corriecravie edition (around 55% ABV), have also been issued alongside the core expressions as the distillery's peated stocks continue to mature.
