Laggan Bay Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located at Glenegedale on the Isle of Islay, Scotland, close to Islay Airport and overlooking Laggan Bay, the island's longest beach. It was founded in 2025 and is currently owned by Ian Macleod Distillers, the independent, family-run Scottish whisky company behind Glengoyne, Tamdhu and Rosebank. Laggan Bay filled its first cask on 2 April 2026, making it one of the newest working distilleries on Islay.
Plans for Laggan Bay were announced in May 2024 as a partnership between Ian Macleod Distillers, which has more than 120 years of whisky-making experience, and a group of local investors known as the Islay Boys. The distillery was built during 2025 on a site midway between Bowmore and Port Ellen, next to Islay Airport, chosen for its proximity to Laggan Bay, which stretches from Laggan Point in the north to Kintra on the Oa Peninsula in the south. Sustainability was built into the design from the outset: the site uses purpose-built wetlands to treat distillery waste water and support local wildlife, and horizontal condensers that recycle heat generated during distillation. Ian Macleod Distillers has also explored renewable energy options for the site with the Islay Energy Trust and Scottish Power. Laggan Bay is run by distillery manager Malcolm Rennie, an Islay native with experience at several other Scottish distilleries. The first cask of new-make spirit was filled on 2 April 2026, and the distillery marked the occasion with a public opening event on 31 May 2026, timed to coincide with Fèis Ìle, Islay's annual whisky festival. Built with capacity for around one million litres of pure alcohol per year, Laggan Bay's early production is focused on heavily peated, Islay-style whisky, with unpeated expressions planned for the future.
Laggan Bay has not yet released any whisky. Its first cask was only filled in April 2026, and under Scotch Whisky Regulations spirit must mature in oak casks for a minimum of three years before it can legally be sold as whisky. Ian Macleod Distillers has confirmed that early production is being laid down as heavily peated Islay whisky, with a core range, including planned unpeated expressions, still to be announced.
