Limavady Distillery — County Londonderry Single Malt Whisky

Limavady Distillery is an Irish whiskey distillery that once stood on the banks of the River Roe in Limavady, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. It was founded in 1805, building on a site with whiskey-making roots reaching back to 1750, and it closed in 1915 after passing through several owners. At its peak in the late 19th century it was a substantial producer, praised by whisky writer Alfred Barnard during his 1886 tour of the distilleries of the British Isles.

History

Whiskey production on the site is said to date to 1750, when John Alexander distilled on family lands near Binevenagh mountain, drawing water from the River Roe. The distillery took its more formal, lasting shape in 1805 under David Cather, who expanded the operation and added an adjoining brewery. Ownership passed to James Galloway & Co in 1864, then to James McLoughlin in 1880, before being sold in 1883 to Young, King & Co Ltd, a Belfast whiskey-blending firm. Under Young, King & Co the distillery grew considerably: by 1890 it was producing around 1.2 million litres of pure alcohol a year, and its whiskey was well regarded, with Alfred Barnard writing in 1886 that it cheered "the heart of many an 'Exile of Erin' in distant colonies of the Empire."

Closure & Legacy

In 1913, Young, King & Co Ltd became part of the Distillers Finance Corporation (DFC), a group focused mainly on Scotch whisky that grew by acquiring Irish distilleries. The DFC's strategy was to rationalise the industry by buying up distilleries and closing many of them within two years of acquisition, and Limavady Distillery ceased production in 1915 as part of this consolidation, amid the broader decline of Irish whiskey distilling in the early 20th century. No original Limavady bottlings are known to survive in today's collector market, so the distillery's legacy rests mainly on its documented history as a once-substantial 19th-century Irish whiskey producer rather than on any stock still in circulation.
