Lough Mask Distillery — County Mayo Single Malt Whisky

Lough Mask Distillery is an Irish whiskey distillery located in Tourmakeady (Tuar Mhic Éadaigh), on the shores of Lough Mask in County Mayo, Ireland. It was founded in 2018 and is independently owned and operated by its founding team through the company Drioglann Loch Measc Teo. It is one of only a small number of licensed distilleries in Connacht, operating in the Irish-speaking Gaeltacht region of west Mayo.

History

Lough Mask Distillery was established in 2018 inside a restored, previously derelict building on the shore of Lough Mask (Loch Measc in Irish), which the founders rebuilt largely by hand. The project was led by local head distiller Andrew Burke Hastings, alongside general manager Niamh Seoighe, with a stated focus on small-batch, instinct-driven craft production rather than industrial-scale output. The distillery began by producing gin and vodka to generate early revenue while its whiskey matured, a common model among new-wave Irish craft distilleries. In 2021 the distillery was granted Geographical Indication (GI) status for Irish Whiskey and produced its first single malt spirit, which has since been laid down to mature in American and European oak casks for a minimum of three years. The distillery has continued to expand production capacity, adding new equipment in the years since, and now sells maturing whiskey casks directly to private investors alongside offering on-site guided tours and an open day programme. Its gin has picked up star ratings in the Guide to the Whiskeys awards in 2023 and 2025.
