North Uist Distillery — Islands Single Malt Whisky

North Uist Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located at Nunton Steadings on Benbecula, in the Outer Hebrides island chain associated with North Uist, Scotland. It was founded in 2024 and is currently owned and run by husband-and-wife team Kate and Jonny, the same family behind the island's Downpour gin brand. It is one of the youngest working distilleries in Scotland, still laying down its first casks of single malt while an interim "Guest House" whisky series and new-make spirit are sold to visitors in the meantime.

History

North Uist Distillery grew out of a family gin business that Kate and Jonny began on a tabletop still in a borrowed shed on North Uist in 2017, trading as Downpour. As that gin range grew — winning Scottish Gin Distillery of the Year for three consecutive years and B Corp certification in 2023 — the founders converted Nunton Steadings, an 18th-century steading on neighbouring Benbecula with a history as a nunnery site, cattle byre, wedding venue and grain mill, into a full production distillery and visitor centre. Whisky stills were commissioned there in 2024, and the site now malts heritage bere barley grown by local island crofters at its own on-island maltings, running as a single-cask operation that lays down one cask of new make a day. Because the first casks have only recently been filled, no aged single malt has yet been released; in the meantime the distillery sells its new-make spirit and a "Guest House" series of blended whiskies sourced from partner distilleries, alongside its established Downpour gin and Hebridean spiced rum ranges. The site operates as a working distillery and visitor attraction with a shop and tasting bar, powered entirely by electrical energy as part of the founders' environmental commitments.

Core Range

North Uist Distillery has not yet released an aged single malt, as its first whisky casks are still maturing. Current whisky-related offerings are New Make Spirit (unaged spirit "fresh from the stills") and the Guest House Series, a range of blended whiskies drawn from partner distilleries and sold mainly at the distillery. The site's better-established core range remains its Downpour spirits, including Downpour Scottish Dry Gin, Downpour Coast & Croft Gin, Downpour Sloe & Bramble Gin, Downpour Pink Grapefruit Gin, an Oak Aged Negroni, and Downpour Hebridean Spiced Rum.
