Old Carrick Mill Distillery — County Monaghan Single Malt Whisky

Old Carrick Mill Distillery is an Irish whiskey distillery located at Derrylavan, near Carrickmacross, in County Monaghan, Ireland. It was founded in 2014 by Steven Murphy and is currently owned and independently run by him as a small, family-scale craft producer. It holds the distinction of being the first distillery to operate in County Monaghan in more than 150 years.

History

Old Carrick Mill was founded by Steven Murphy, a Monaghan native with a longstanding interest in Irish spirits. In March 2014 he travelled to Seattle to complete a distilling course, an experience that exposed him to the American craft-spirits boom and convinced him to build a distillery of his own back home. He chose the site of an old flour mill on the outskirts of Carrickmacross, a building dating back more than two centuries and previously known locally as Barton's Mill, retaining features such as its original 22-foot iron water wheel and a tunnel that once channelled water from the millrace to the nearby river.

It took roughly three years of restoration and set-up work before the fledgling operation sold its first bottle, a milestone Murphy has described as making Old Carrick Mill "the 1st distillery in Co. Monaghan in 157 years." The distillery draws its water from a spring on the property, naturally filtered through the local limestone, and distils in traditional copper pot stills. Murphy acts as founder, owner and master distiller, and the business has grown to encompass a small-batch gin alongside an expanding range of pot still Irish whiskey released chiefly under the May-Lóag name, a nod to the ancient Kingdom of Oriel in which the mill sits. The distillery is promoted locally as a visitor attraction, with behind-the-scenes tours featured by Monaghan Tourism.

Core Range

Old Carrick Mill's whiskey is bottled principally under its May-Lóag brand, made from triple-distilled single malt matured in ex-bourbon and other wine casks. Core expressions include May-Lóag Elegance Single Malt (46% ABV, matured fully in ex-bourbon barrels), May-Lóag Diamond and May-Lóag Triple Wood (both 46% ABV), and May-Lóag Oriel, a blend of grain whiskey and three single malts finished across red wine, sherry and bourbon casks (40% ABV). Limited-edition single-cask bottlings appear under the Rogues Reserve single malt series, released at cask strength. Alongside its whiskey, the distillery also produces the Old Carrick Mill Small Batch Gin, hand-filled and botanically built around juniper, pear and cucumber.
