Old Tullamore (B. Daly & Co) Distillery — County Offaly Single Malt Whisky

Old Tullamore (B. Daly & Co) Distillery is an Irish whiskey distillery located in Tullamore, County Offaly, Ireland. It was founded in 1829 and closed in 1954 after a long decline in sales. It is the original home of the whiskey that became world-famous as Tullamore D.E.W., named after the distillery's transformative general manager, Daniel E. Williams.

History

The distillery was established in Tullamore in 1829 by Michael Molloy. On his death, ownership passed to his nephew Bernard Daly, and the business traded for a time as "Daly's Whiskey," shipping to markets in Britain and Australia. Bernard Daly later appointed Daniel E. Williams as general manager, and Williams went on to transform both the distillery and the town: he expanded production, introduced electricity to Tullamore in 1893, and installed the town's first telephone line. After Williams's death, his family honoured his role by rebranding the whiskey using his initials, giving rise to the "D.E.W." name that survives today. Under the Williams and Daly families the distillery became one of Ireland's better-known whiskey producers through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Closure & Legacy

Like many Irish distilleries of the era, Old Tullamore was hit hard by a combination of US Prohibition, the Anglo-Irish Trade War, and heavy taxation, and it ceased production in 1954 after years of financial difficulty. Rather than reopen, its owners sold the Tullamore Dew brand on to John Powers & Son in the 1960s, and it later passed through Irish Distillers and the C&C Group before William Grant & Sons acquired it in 2010. The original distillery's bonded warehouse on Bury Quay was restored and reopened in 2012 as the Tullamore D.E.W. Heritage Centre, a visitor attraction with tours and tastings on the historic site. In 2014, William Grant & Sons opened a new, purpose-built Tullamore Distillery nearby, returning whiskey production to the town after a 60-year gap and continuing the brand's legacy. Original bottlings and memorabilia from the pre-1954 B. Daly & Co / Williams era are now scarce and sought after by collectors of Irish whiskey history.
