Parkmore Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located near Dufftown, Speyside, Scotland. It was founded in 1894 and ceased production in 1931, though it was not formally closed until 1988. Parkmore is one of Speyside's notable "ghost" distilleries — silent for decades but its buildings still standing, now used purely for whisky warehousing.
Parkmore Distillery was built in 1894 by the Parkmore Distillery Company on a site near Dufftown, in the heart of the Speyside whisky-producing region. It changed hands relatively quickly in its early years, passing to blending firm James Watson & Co. Ltd in 1900. Following Watson's acquisition by John Dewar & Sons in 1923, Parkmore was absorbed into the vast Distillers Company Limited (DCL) portfolio in 1925, and ownership was transferred to Scottish Malt Distilleries Ltd in 1930.
Like many smaller distilleries caught up in DCL's rationalisation during the industry downturn of the early 1930s, Parkmore stopped distilling in 1931. Unusually, however, the distillery buildings were retained rather than demolished, and continued to be used as a maturation warehouse for decades afterwards, passing through Highland Distillers (from 1988) and, following a 1999 restructuring, into the joint Edrington/William Grant & Sons ownership arrangement.
Parkmore's production era was brief by Speyside standards, lasting less than 40 years before distilling stopped in 1931; the site was formally recorded as closed in 1988. Rather than being demolished, the distillery's characteristic pagoda-roofed buildings survive largely intact and remain in use for whisky storage, making Parkmore one of the best-preserved examples of a "ghost" distillery in the region. Because so little spirit was ever produced and it predates the era of widespread single malt bottling, official Parkmore-branded whisky is essentially unknown; any surviving stock would have gone into blends of the era rather than being bottled under the distillery's own name, and no independent or official single malt releases are documented. As a result, Parkmore is of interest chiefly to whisky historians and Speyside distillery enthusiasts rather than as a source of collectible bottlings.
