Provanmill Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery that once stood in Glasgow, in the Lowland region of Scotland. Its founding date does not appear to survive in accessible records, and it had ceased production by 1922, with the distillery buildings demolished in 1953. Provanmill is one of the more obscure entries among the long list of vanished 19th- and early 20th-century Glasgow distilleries, with very little documented history remaining publicly available.
Detailed records of Provanmill Distillery's founding, early ownership, and day-to-day operation have not been located in the standard whisky reference sources. It took its name from the Provanmill area of Glasgow, a city that at its industrial peak hosted a large concentration of malt and grain distilleries supplying the blended Scotch whisky trade. Like many smaller Lowland producers of the period, Provanmill fell victim to the severe contraction the Scotch whisky industry underwent in the years following the First World War, when wartime restrictions on grain use, falling demand, and the consolidation of distilling capacity under large combines such as the Distillers Company Limited forced the closure of numerous distilleries across Scotland. Provanmill ceased production in 1922. The redundant buildings were left standing for roughly three decades before finally being demolished in 1953.
Provanmill closed in 1922 as part of the wider post-First World War downturn that swept away many small Scottish distilleries, and the site itself was cleared in 1953, leaving no surviving structures. No confirmed original Provanmill bottlings are known to circulate among collectors or at auction today, and the distillery is essentially unrepresented in modern whisky reference works and tasting archives. For whisky historians, Provanmill stands as an example of how completely some pre-war Lowland distilleries have faded from the record, leaving behind little more than a name, a location, and a closure date.
Provanmill distillery is from Lowland, scotland.
