Saucel Distillery is a former Scotch whisky distillery that once stood on Saucel Street in Paisley, Renfrewshire, within Scotland's Lowland whisky region. Its exact founding date is not reliably recorded in surviving sources, and it closed in 1915, after which the buildings were demolished. Only sparse documentary traces of the distillery survive today, making it one of the more obscure entries among the many small Lowland distilleries that vanished in the early 20th century.
Saucel Distillery operated in the Saucel district of Paisley, a town on the White Cart Water that was historically home to a cluster of small industrial works, including engineering shops, the nearby Saucel Ironworks, dye works and tanneries, alongside its much larger and better-known thread-making trade. Detailed contemporary records of the distillery's output, capacity, or ownership have not survived in accessible sources, which is typical of the numerous small Lowland malt and grain distilleries that supplied Scotland's blending trade through the 19th century. The Lowlands were, at their peak, home to dozens of such operations, the majority of which — like Saucel — did not survive into the 20th century.
Saucel Distillery closed in 1915, a period when many smaller Lowland distilleries were being pushed out of business by industry consolidation and the shift toward larger, more efficient distilleries supplying the major blending houses. Following its closure, the distillery buildings on Saucel Street were demolished, and no structures survive on the site today. The distillery is recorded in Scotland's national historic environment record (Canmore ID 43194, NS46SE 65) as a former industrial site in Paisley, which remains the principal documentary trace of its existence. No verified original Saucel bottlings are known to be in circulation; given the near-total absence of surviving stock or paperwork, any bottle claiming to be from Saucel would warrant careful provenance checking before purchase.
