St Magdalene Distillery — Lowland Single Malt Whisky

St Magdalene Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located in Linlithgow, Lowland, Scotland. It was founded in 1798 and was closed in 1983 by its then-owner, Diageo (via United Distillers' predecessor DCL). St Magdalene is one of the Lowlands' most celebrated "ghost" distilleries, prized by collectors for its smooth, light, fruity malt.

History

Whisky production on the site dates back to at least 1798, though some records suggest distilling activity as early as the mid-to-late 18th century, originally under the name Linlithgow Distillery. The site itself carried a much older history: it stood on ground once occupied by a medieval leper colony, convent and hospital dedicated to St Mary Magdalene, from which the distillery eventually took its name after relocating to be closer to the Union Canal in 1834. Through most of the 19th century the distillery was run by the Dawson family, who expanded production significantly — by 1856 output had reached around 4,000 US gallons of whisky per week with a workforce of roughly 30. Ownership passed to what became the Distillers Company Limited (DCL) in 1912, following the death of John Kellie Dawson, and the plant was substantially modernised in a 1927 renovation. St Magdalene operated with a single wash still and a single spirit still, and its output was used predominantly for blending, though its character made it a distinctive Lowland single malt in its own right.

Closure & Legacy

St Magdalene was permanently closed in 1983 amid a severe industry-wide downturn that saw many Lowland distilleries shut their doors. The distillery buildings, including their distinctive pagoda roofs, were later converted into residential apartments and remain protected under listed-building status, preserving the site's architectural character even though no whisky has been made there since closure. With only limited stocks ever laid down and very few casks remaining in maturation, original St Magdalene bottlings — including official Rare Malts releases such as a 23-year-old 1970 vintage and a 19-year-old 1979 vintage, plus later special releases — have become highly collectible, with bottles commonly fetching several hundred pounds or more at auction. It is regarded today as one of Scotland's most sought-after closed Lowland distilleries.
