Starlaw (grain) Distillery — Lowland Single Malt Whisky

Starlaw Distillery is a Scotch grain whisky distillery located near Bathgate, West Lothian, in the Lowland region of Scotland. It was founded in 2010 and is currently owned by La Martiniquaise, the French drinks group, which operates it through its Scottish subsidiary Glen Turner Company Ltd. Unlike most malt whisky distilleries, Starlaw is a large-scale continuous-still grain plant built primarily to supply base spirit for blended Scotch brands rather than to bottle whisky under its own name.

History

Starlaw was constructed in 2010 by La Martiniquaise as a purpose-built grain distillery integrated with a vatting, blending and bottling plant, allowing the company to produce, blend and bottle whisky at a single West Lothian site. The distillery sits in Scotland's traditional grain-whisky belt, within reach of Livingston and the wider Central Lowlands, and was designed from the outset for large-volume continuous production rather than visitor tourism. It has grown substantially since opening, with an extensive estate of maturation warehouses developed on site to hold maturing stock for La Martiniquaise's Scotch portfolio; a 2021 proposal to add further warehousing was turned down by West Lothian Council after local objections, though the distillery itself has continued operating at scale. Starlaw's grain spirit forms the backbone of La Martiniquaise's major blended brands, including Label 5 and Cutty Sark, cementing its role as one of the newer but most productive grain distilleries in Scotland.

Core Range

Starlaw does not bottle a branded core range of its own; its continuous-still grain spirit is used almost entirely as base whisky for La Martiniquaise's blended Scotch brands, most notably Label 5 and Cutty Sark. Single grain expressions carrying the Starlaw name occasionally appear as limited releases from independent bottlers rather than as an official house range.
