Strathdee Distillery — Highland Single Malt Whisky

Strathdee Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery that was located in Aberdeen, Highland, Scotland. It was founded in 1821 and was closed during the Second World War, with production never resuming. Strathdee was one of several small distilleries once clustered around Aberdeen's River Dee valley, and its site has since been demolished, leaving it as a largely forgotten name in Highland whisky history.

History

Strathdee distillery was built in 1821 by Henry Ogg on Balmoral Road, in the valley of the River Dee, drawing its process water from the Manofield Burn. According to Alfred Barnard's 19th-century survey of British distilleries, output at Strathdee ranged from around 15,000 to 25,000 gallons per year, making it a modest-sized operation by the standards of the day.

Ownership changed hands several times over the following decades. David Walker acquired the distillery in 1895 and ran it until 1915, when it was incorporated as the Strathdee Distillery Co. The company was sold to Robertson & Co in 1920, and in 1925 Strathdee was absorbed into Train & McIntyre, a blending and distilling group that was in turn acquired by National Distillers of America.

Closure & Legacy

Strathdee was mothballed during the Second World War, and its last recorded distillation is believed to have taken place in 1942. The distillery never reopened afterward and the buildings were subsequently demolished, leaving no physical trace of the site today. As with many small distilleries lost in the WWII-era wave of closures across Scotland, no widely documented independent bottlings of Strathdee single malt are known to survive, and detailed tasting records or historic labels are scarce. It remains chiefly of interest to whisky historians as one of the vanished distilleries of the Dee valley, documented in Alfred Barnard's Victorian-era distillery survey and later industry histories.
