Strathearn Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located near Methven, Highland, Scotland. It was founded in 2013 and is currently owned by Douglas Laing & Co. Strathearn is notable as one of Scotland's smallest whisky distilleries, producing single malt exclusively in small 50-litre casks.
Strathearn Distillery was established in 2013 by Tony Reeman-Clark, David Lang and David Wight, and set up production within a 160-year-old stone farm steading at Bachilton, near Methven in Perthshire. The site has a distilling connection stretching back further still: it stands on the location of an earlier distillery founded by William White in 1798, which had long since fallen out of use. Strathearn initially focused on gin before turning its two small Portuguese-made alembic stills (built by Hoga, and originally designed for the Portuguese sherry industry) to whisky, with the first spirit run in October 2013. The distillery's whisky is made using an unusually long fermentation, among the longest of any Scotch whisky producer, and its water is drawn from nearby Loch Turret. Its first single malt releases followed a few years later. In 2019, Strathearn was acquired by Glasgow-based independent bottler Douglas Laing & Co, which invested in the site and doubled production capacity while retaining its hand-crafted, small-batch approach. The first single malt bottled under Douglas Laing's ownership, "The Heart," was released in 2022.
Strathearn's whisky output is small and largely limited-release rather than a fixed core range, reflecting its production of roughly the equivalent of one barrel of whisky a day. Its flagship release under Douglas Laing ownership is The Heart single malt, bottled at 50% ABV and matured across a combination of bourbon, sherry and new oak casks. The distillery also produces a range of gins, including its original Strathearn Gin expressions.
