Tamnavulin Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located near Tomnavoulin, in Glenlivet, Speyside, Scotland. It was founded in 1966 and is currently owned by Whyte & Mackay, part of the Philippines-based Emperador group. Tamnavulin takes its name — Gaelic for "mill on the hill" — from the ruined 16th-century carding mill and waterwheel that still stand on the distillery site and appear on every bottle's label.
Tamnavulin was built in 1966 by Tamnavulin-Glenlivet Distillery Co. Ltd, a subsidiary of Invergordon Distillers, during the wave of new Speyside distillery construction that also produced Tomintoul and Glenallachie to meet booming demand for blended Scotch. Like most distilleries of its generation, it was built purely to supply malt whisky for blends rather than for release as a single malt. Invergordon Distillers, and Tamnavulin with it, was acquired by Whyte & Mackay in 1993. The distillery was mothballed in 1995 as the whisky market slumped, and stood silent for over a decade before reopening in 2007 following Whyte & Mackay's acquisition by the Indian drinks group United Spirits. Ownership passed again in 2014 when Whyte & Mackay was bought by the Philippine conglomerate Emperador Inc. Since 2016, Tamnavulin has been actively developed as a single malt brand in its own right, built around double-cask and wine-cask-finished expressions, and has grown into one of the best-selling single malt brands in the UK and Sweden.
Tamnavulin's core range centres on no-age-statement, double-cask-matured single malts that showcase a light, fruity Speyside style with minimal peat influence. Key expressions include the Double Cask (ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, 40% ABV) and the Sherry Cask Edition (finished across three styles of ex-sherry cask, 40% ABV), alongside a rotating line-up of red and white wine cask finishes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Tempranillo.
