Thistle Distillery (also recorded as the Mountain Dew Distillery) was a Scotch whisky distillery located on Burnside Street in Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland. It was founded in 1834 by the partnership of Hervey and McMillan and was closed just three years later, in 1837. It was one of the shortest-lived of the roughly thirty distilleries that operated in Campbeltown during the town's 19th-century whisky boom.
Thistle Distillery was established in 1834 on Burnside Street in Campbeltown by Hervey and McMillan, at a time when the town was rapidly becoming one of Scotland's most concentrated whisky-producing districts thanks to its ready supply of local coal, barley, and a sheltered harbour for shipping casks to Glasgow. Also known by the name Mountain Dew, the distillery's operating life was brief: it ceased production in 1837, only three years after opening. Surviving records of Thistle's output, ownership changes, or production methods are extremely sparse, which is typical of the many small, undercapitalised ventures that opened and closed quickly during Campbeltown's crowded early boom period, well before the town's later 19th-century peak of around thirty working distilleries.
Thistle Distillery closed in 1837 after only three years of production. No detailed contemporary account of the closure survives, but it fits the broader pattern of Campbeltown's early distilling era, in which numerous small, undercapitalised operations opened and failed quickly amid intense local competition, long before the industry consolidated around a much smaller number of larger, longer-lived distilleries such as Springbank and Glen Scotia. No verified bottlings or casks from Thistle/Mountain Dew are known to survive, and the site itself has long since been redeveloped, making this one of Campbeltown's more obscure and undocumented historic distilleries rather than a name collectors actively seek out.
