Toberanrigh Distillery — Campbeltown Single Malt Whisky

Toberanrigh Distillery was a Scotch whisky distillery located in or near Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland. Its founding date is not recorded, but historical distillery registers show it was closed by 1860 and its buildings were subsequently demolished. Toberanrigh was one of the many small, short-lived distilleries that sprang up in Campbeltown during the 19th century, when the town briefly held the title of "whisky capital of the world."

History

Very little detailed history of Toberanrigh Distillery survives. It operated at some point during the first half of the 19th century, the period in which Campbeltown grew to house more than 30 licensed distilleries, drawing on abundant local barley, peat, coastal coal supplies, and a sheltered harbour that allowed easy shipment of whisky to Glasgow and beyond. Toberanrigh was among the smaller, less well-capitalised of these operations. Like a number of its contemporaries, it traded for a relatively short period before closing well ahead of Campbeltown's later, better-documented boom-and-bust cycle of the early 20th century. No ownership records, production figures, or tasting notes for Toberanrigh are known to survive; today it is recorded chiefly as an entry on historical lists of Campbeltown's lost distilleries.

Closure & Legacy

Toberanrigh closed in 1860, and its distillery buildings were demolished not long after, leaving no structure standing at the site today. Its closure came well before the major wave of Campbeltown distillery closures in the 1920s and 1930s, which reduced the town from over 30 distilleries to the handful that survive now. No bottlings, casks, or other whisky known to have been produced at Toberanrigh survive on the market, so unlike some of Campbeltown's more famous lost names, it has no presence in the modern collectible whisky trade.
