Tomintoul Distillery is a prominent distillery situated in Kirkmichael, between Ballindalloch and Tomintoul, within the renowned Speyside region of Scotland. It specializes in producing malt whisky for both blends and as bottled single malts.
The distillery was established in 1964 by the Glasgow whisky traders Hey & Macleod and W. and S. Strong, who formed Tomintoul Distillery Ltd. to manage operations. Initially, the distillery operated with one wash still and one spirit still. In 1973, the Scottish and Universal Investment Trust acquired the distillery, and in 1974, they doubled its production capacity by adding an additional pair of steam-heated stills. That same year marked the release of Tomintoul's first single malt bottling.
Ownership changes continued over the years, with Whyte & Mackay acquiring the distillery in 1989, followed by American Brands in 1990. Under American Brands' ownership, Tomintoul released a 12-year-old bottling in a uniquely styled bottle. In 2000, Angus Dundee Distillers, PLC, took ownership and introduced a 10-year-old malt in a more conventional bottle. The product line expanded significantly in the subsequent years, including the addition of a 16-year-old malt in 2003 and a 27-year-old malt in 2004. In 2005, the distillery launched a peated vintage called 'Old Ballantruan,' followed by a 12-year-old malt finished in Oloroso butts, a vatting of unpeated and peated malts named 'Peaty Tang,' and a 1976 vintage.
In 2009, Tomintoul entered the Guinness Book of World Records by producing the largest bottle of whisky in the world, containing 105.3 liters of 14-year-old Tomintoul malt whisky.
Tomintoul Distillery operates with two wash stills and two spirit stills, all steam-heated, with a combined production capacity of 3,300,000 liters of pure alcohol per year. The distillery uses six stainless steel washbacks and sources its water from the Ballantruan spring. Cooling water is sourced from two nearby ponds.
Tomintoul offers a diverse range of single malts, including:
The distillery's 33-year-old malt was recognized as the best Speyside whisky of 2010 at the Whiskymag World Whiskies Awards.
In 2010, Royal Wine Corporation became the exclusive importer of Tomintoul products in the United States, enhancing accessibility to the American market. Several Tomintoul whiskies have received kosher certification, making them suitable for those observing kosher dietary laws.
Tomintoul Distillery is owned and operated by Angus Dundee Distillers, PLC, a London-based company that also owns and operates the Glencadam distillery.
The distillery is open to visitors, offering tours and tastings that provide insights into the whisky-making process and the rich history of Tomintoul Distillery.
