Towiemore Distillery — Highland Single Malt Whisky

Towiemore Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery that stood near Botriphnie, in the Highland region of Scotland. It was founded in 1896 by distiller and blender Peter Dawson and closed permanently by around 1930, one of many small distilleries that did not survive the difficult interwar years of the Scotch whisky industry. Little of the original site remains today, and Towiemore is now remembered chiefly through a modern blended-malt tribute rather than any surviving vintage stock.

History

Towiemore Distillery was built in 1896 at Botriphnie, near Keith, by Peter Dawson, a well-known distiller and whisky blender of the period. Classified as a Highland malt distillery, it was a modest operation equipped with just one wash still and one spirit still. Production was interrupted during the First World War, a time when many smaller Scottish distilleries were forced to suspend operations due to wartime restrictions on grain use and falling demand. When Towiemore reopened after the war, it reportedly struggled to recapture its earlier form: the whisky produced in this later period was said to run cloudy and never regained the quality or reputation of the pre-war spirit. Combined with the difficult trading conditions facing the whisky industry through the 1920s, the distillery closed for good by around 1930.

Closure & Legacy

Towiemore ceased production by 1930 and was later demolished, with little of the original distillery surviving to the present day. As with many Scottish distilleries lost in the first half of the twentieth century, genuine bottlings of Towiemore single malt are now extremely rare and are of interest mainly to whisky historians and collectors of "ghost distillery" memorabilia. In 2016, the Lost Distillery Company released a blended malt whisky under the Towiemore name, created using historical research in an attempt to recreate a whisky in the style of the original. This tribute release, rather than any surviving original stock, is the main way modern drinkers can encounter the Towiemore name today.
