Union Distillery — Campbeltown Single Malt Whisky

Union Distillery was a Scotch whisky distillery located in Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland. Its exact founding date is not recorded in surviving sources, and it closed in 1850, after which the distillery buildings were demolished. Union was one of dozens of small, short-lived distilleries that sprang up in Campbeltown during the town's nineteenth-century whisky boom, when at its peak the burgh was home to more than thirty licensed distilleries.

History

Campbeltown's remoteness on the Kintyre peninsula, its sheltered harbour, and its ready supply of peat, barley, and coal made it one of Scotland's most concentrated whisky-producing towns through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Union Distillery was among the smaller operations established during this period of rapid expansion, but unlike the handful of Campbeltown distilleries that survived into the twentieth century, it did not last beyond the mid-Victorian era. Detailed records of its founder, ownership, and production have not survived, which is typical of the many short-lived Campbeltown distilleries of this period that left little documentary trace once they ceased trading.
