Wolfburn Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located near Thurso, Caithness, Scotland. It was originally established in 1821 by William Smith, making it one of the earliest distilleries in the region. Operating for several decades under the ownership of the Smith family, Wolfburn was known for its significant production capacity, becoming the largest distillery in Caithness during its prime. Historical records indicate that by 1826, Wolfburn produced approximately 125,000 liters of whisky annually, demonstrating its prominence in the local whisky industry.
However, the original Wolfburn Distillery ceased production in the mid-19th century, with the exact closure date being a subject of historical debate. By 1872, the distillery site was depicted as a ruin on the Ordnance Survey map, marking the end of its first era.
In a remarkable revival, a private consortium received approval in 2012 from Caithness planning authorities to reconstruct Wolfburn Distillery at Henderson Park, Thurso, about 350 meters from the original site. The new distillery, drawing its name from the nearby Wolf Burn stream, commenced production in early 2013. The revived Wolfburn is distinguished as the northernmost whisky distillery on the Scottish mainland.
The modern Wolfburn Distillery comprises the main distillery building and three warehouses dedicated to aging casks. Forsyths, renowned fabricators in the industry, were contracted to install the distillery's equipment and plant. In February 2016, Wolfburn inaugurated its on-site bottling facility, marking a significant milestone in its revival. The inaugural whisky, named "Northland," was globally launched in March 2016 and has since garnered numerous accolades, including several gold medals in international competitions.
Wolfburn continues the tradition of producing single malt Scotch whisky, maintaining a focus on craftsmanship and quality. The distillery's revival not only resurrects a historic name in Scottish whisky but also contributes to the rich tapestry of Scotland's whisky heritage.
