Ardbeg – 13 Year Old Fermutation Committee Release is a whisky from Ardbeg (Islay). Aged 13 years, bottled at 49.4% ABV, 70cl. Since its establishment in 1815, The Ardbeg distillery has been on a tumultuous rollercoaster ride of ownership changes, closures, and reopening. Stability was only achieved relatively recently, when the ailing distillery was purchased in 1997 by industry giants, Glenmorangie. The subsequent years have seen the distillery’s popularity swell, with fans enticed by the signature style of tarry, sooty smoke, balanced against citric sweetness and an oily mouthfeel. While Ardbeg still retains its distinctive personality, it has definitely been influenced by Glenmorangie’s propensity for experimenting with cask finishing, and (dare we say it) NAS expressions. The result of an happy accident from 2007, in which a boiler broke down. It led to an interesting experiment, as six washbacks with tens of thousands of litres of fermented wort, sat waiting to be distilled. The lids were lifted from the washbacks for 3 weeks which allowed the liquid to breathe, and the magic to happen. 13 Years later, we have this interesting and dare we say it delicious whisky. This limited edition highlights the impact of the longest fermentation in Ardbeg’s history. Fermutation
