Macallan – Private Eye is a whisky from Macallan (Speyside). Bottled at 40% ABV, 70cl. The Macallan distillery was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and school teacher. Now owned by the Edrington Group, The Macallan prides itself on its Six Pillars, which include its curiously small stills, very narrow ‘cut’ of new make spirit and exceptional cask management. It is the most sought after whisky for collectors. A new £140 million subterranean distillery and visitor centre on the Easter Elchies estate was opened to the public in the summer of 2018 and has since won several awards for its architectural quality; with its exciting features including glass walls of vintage whiskies, a circular pod of copper pot stills, and a Boutique reflecting those in Dubai and Heathrow airports. This highly collectible Macallan was released in 1996 to celebrate the 35 th anniversary of the UK’s best known satirical current affairs magazine, Private Eye. The bottle itself features a striking screen-printed label designed by renowned illustrator, and frequent Private Eye collaborator, Ralph Steadman. The exact composition of the whisky isn’t known, but we can infer from the colour that it conforms with the distillery’s signature, sherried style. What we do know for sure, is that a portion was drawn from cask number #1580, which was bonded in 1961, so there’s some well-aged whisky in the mix.
