Laphroaig – 18 Year Old is a single malt whisky from Laphroaig (Islay). Aged 18 years, bottled at 48% ABV, 70cl.
Laphroaig is a substantial distillery with 7 stills and a capacity of over 3 million litres per year! The distillery was built in 1815 by brothers Alexander and Donald Johnston, the distillery remained under D. Johnston & Co until the 1960s. In the 20th century, the distillery saw a rise to fame when Donald's great-grandson Ian Hunter took over. When Ian died, he left the distillery to his secretary, Bessie Williamson who had been the acting manager during Ian's extensive international sales trips. Bessie retired in 1972 and the distillery was granted a Royal Warrant in 1994 from HRH The Prince of Wales at the time. This was also the year that Friends of Laphroaig was founded, which to this day has around 640,000 members.
Laphroaig 18 Year Old was introduced in 2009 as a replacement for the old 15 Year Old (Prince Charles' sorely missed favourite whisky, lest we forget).
