Spey 12 Year Old Peated is a whisky. Aged 12 years, bottled at 46% ABV, 70cl.
A young distillery in terms of Speyside distilleries, Speyside Distillery was only commissioned in 1962 by John Harvey McDonough and finally completed in 1987. It wasn’t until 1990 that the first spirit flowed from the stills. A small site, one of the most southerly of the Speyside triangle, is located close to the town of Kingussie. It has a pair of stills which were originally installed in the Lochside distillery but were cut down to size in order to fit into their new still house.
Virtually unseen as a single malt – it has appeared under the name Drumguish (named after the surrounding village) launched in 1993. 2001 saw the first 10 year old single malt and by 2013, the distillery was sold to Harvey’s of Edinburgh. The following year saw Harvey’s release a new range under the name ’Spey’. This was predominantly sold in Taiwan.
In May 2025, it was announced that Speyside distillery would close it’s doors for good as its land lease expired and the company needed to expand operations, The new operation will be relocated to Strathmashie by Laggan, where they will produce Highland whisky under a different name. The mash tun, stills, and washbacks were dismantled and stored by Forsyths Ltd to be reinstalled at the new Strathmashie location.
