Lagavulin – 16 Year Old - White Horse is a single malt whisky from Lagavulin (Islay). Aged 16 years, bottled at 43% ABV, 70cl.
Lagavulin is said to be one of the oldest distilleries on Islay and is world-renowned for its smoky, peaty whiskies. It is situated on Islay's south coast where legal distilling started in 1816 by John Johnson. The distillery was then moved into the hands of the Mackie's who launched White Horse into export markets. White Horse Distillers became part of DCL in 1927 just shortly before the Distillery was closed in 1942 for the remainder of WWII. Later, Lagavulin 16 joined the Classic Malts portfolio in 1989 and ever since has been a great success.
This is a popular and much sought-after single malt with the massive peat-smoke that's typical of southern Islay - but also offering richness and a dryness that turns it into a truly interesting tipple. The 16-year-old, aged in oak casks has truly become a benchmark Islay dram from the Lagavulin distillery.
This whisky was The Runner Up in TWE's Whisky of the Year 2014 & 2015 Silver Outstanding Medal Winner - International Wine & Spirits Competition amongst other accolades.
White Horse Edition was bottled before the Diageo takeover when the label still carried the name of White Horse Distillers. This is very appealing to collectors and is fast disappearing.
