A Midwinter Night's Dram Act 8 is High West's 2020 release of its annual port-finished rye, bottled at 49.3% (98.6 proof) and non-chill filtered. Act 8 is the annual release number and Scene 2 the bottling run.
It is built on Rendezvous Rye, a blend of straight ryes: one from a 95% rye MGP recipe, the other High West's own 80% rye and 20% malted rye. The whisky is aged in new charred American oak, then finished in French oak barrels that held Ruby and Tawny Port.
It pours deep auburn. The nose has brandied cherries, fig jam, raisins, orange peel and toasted French oak, and the palate brings quince paste, vanilla caramel, molasses and leather. The finish carries mulling spices, candied dates, black pepper and a hint of spearmint.
