Taiwanese whisky on Glenbotal

Kavalan accounts for nearly all of the Taiwanese section, with Nantou Distillery's Omar single malts making up the rest. The Kavalan range runs from the Classic and Concertmaster to the Solist single cask series, including Vinho Barrique, ex-Bourbon, Sherry and Port casks, mostly at cask strength. Distillery-only bottles and limited editions also appear.

Kavalan

Kavalan belongs to the King Car Group and stands in Yilan County, in north-east Taiwan. It began distilling in 2006 and released its first single malt in 2008. Within a few years its Solist bottlings were winning top international awards, which brought Taiwanese whisky to world attention. The distillery takes its water from the Snow Mountain range and uses pot stills of a Scottish design.

Fast maturation in a subtropical climate

Taiwan is hot and humid, so whisky draws flavour from the cask quickly and a large share evaporates each year. A few years in Taiwan can give the depth of a much older whisky from Scotland, so most Kavalan carries no age statement. Kavalan also reworks wine barrels by shaving, toasting and re-charring them (STR), the process behind Solist Vinho Barrique.

Reading a Kavalan Solist label

  • Cask type and number: each Solist bottle comes from one cask, identified on the label.
  • Strength: usually 54-60% ABV, varying by cask.
  • Size: 70cl for Europe, 75cl or 50cl in some markets.

Nantou, run by the state-owned Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation, sells its whisky as Omar and makes both bourbon and sherry cask single malts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kavalan a good whisky?

Kavalan is Taiwan’s best-known single malt and has won many top international awards since its first release in 2008. Its Solist single cask bottlings, such as Vinho Barrique and Sherry Cask, are rich and fruity. The subtropical climate gives deep cask flavour at a young age.

Where is Kavalan whisky made?

Kavalan is made at the Kavalan distillery in Yilan County, north-east Taiwan, owned by the King Car Group. The distillery began production in 2006 and takes its water from the Snow Mountain range. Kavalan was the first private whisky distillery in Taiwan.

Why does Kavalan have no age statement?

Whisky matures very quickly in Taiwan’s hot, humid climate, and a large share evaporates from the cask each year. After a few years Kavalan whisky can taste as mature as much older Scotch, so the distillery bottles most of its range without an age statement and lets the cask type define each release.

What is Kavalan Solist?

Kavalan Solist is a series of single cask, cask strength single malts from Kavalan in Taiwan. Each bottle comes from one cask, such as ex-Bourbon, Sherry, Port or Vinho Barrique, and the strength usually ranges from about 54% to 60% ABV. Every cask tastes slightly different.

What is Omar whisky?

Omar is the single malt whisky brand of Nantou Distillery in central Taiwan, run by the Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation. It produces bourbon cask and sherry cask single malts and has experimented with local fruit and wine casks. Omar is Taiwan’s second best-known whisky after Kavalan.
