The American range is led by Buffalo Trace and its brands, including Eagle Rare, Blanton's, Colonel E.H. Taylor, W.L. Weller, George T. Stagg and Pappy Van Winkle. Jack Daniel's is the next largest name, then Heaven Hill, Jim Beam, Michter's, Four Roses, Wild Turkey, Maker's Mark and Willett. There are also craft producers such as Westland, Balcones, Koval and Garrison Brothers. Bourbon makes up most of the section, followed by rye and Tennessee whiskey, with some American single malt.
Straight means at least two years old with no added colour or flavour; under four years the age must be stated. Bottled in bond means one distillery, one distilling season, at least four years in a bonded warehouse and exactly 100 proof. Proof is twice the ABV, so 100 proof is 50%. Single barrel bottles come from one cask and vary from barrel to barrel.
US-market bottles are 75cl and some 1L or 1.75L, while UK and EU releases are usually 70cl, so the same bourbon can appear in two sizes. Limited releases such as the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection change each year, so the release year matters as much as the name.
Bourbon is a type of American whiskey. It must be made in the USA from at least 51% corn, aged in new charred oak containers, distilled to no more than 80% ABV and bottled at 40% ABV or more. Whiskey made from other grain recipes or in used casks cannot be called bourbon.
No. Bourbon can be made anywhere in the United States. Most bourbon does come from Kentucky, where producers such as Buffalo Trace, Heaven Hill, Jim Beam and Wild Turkey are based, but bourbon is also made in Tennessee, Texas, New York and many other states.
Bottled in bond is a US standard from the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897. The whiskey must come from one distillery and one distilling season, be aged at least four years in a government-bonded warehouse and be bottled at exactly 100 proof (50% ABV). Colonel E.H. Taylor is a well-known example.
W.L. Weller Single Barrel is a wheated bourbon from Buffalo Trace, released in limited quantities and mostly in the US market. When we have bottles, they are listed in the Kentucky and USA sections of Glenbotal, with free UK delivery on orders over £99. Each single barrel bottling varies slightly in flavour.
The Buffalo Trace Antique Collection is an annual autumn release of five American whiskeys: George T. Stagg, William Larue Weller, Thomas H. Handy Sazerac, Eagle Rare 17 Year Old and Sazerac 18 Year Old. They are usually bottled uncut and unfiltered, so strength and character change from year to year.
The standard bottle size in the United States is 750ml (75cl), while the UK and EU standard is 70cl. Bottles made for the American market are therefore 75cl, and some American releases also come in 1L or 1.75L. The size is printed on the label and listed on each product page.
