English whisky on Glenbotal

English whisky is a young category, and this section shows how fast it has grown. Bimber of London has the most bottles, followed by The Lakes Distillery, Spirit of Yorkshire with its Filey Bay malts, Cotswolds, St. George's Distillery (The English Whisky Co.) and White Peak. Smaller names include Oxford Artisan, Adnams, Circumstance, Ludlow, Yarm and East London Liquor Company. Nearly all are single malts without an age statement, many at cask strength.

A modern revival

Whisky was made in England in the nineteenth century, but production had died out by the early 1900s. St. George's Distillery in Norfolk, which began distilling in 2006, is generally credited with restarting it. A wave of distilleries opened in the following decade: The Lakes in Cumbria and Cotswolds in 2014, then Bimber in west London, Spirit of Yorkshire at Hunmanby and White Peak in Derbyshire.

Style and casks

There is no single English style. Producers draw on local barley, sometimes from their own farms, and experiment with casks: The Lakes is known for sherry cask whisky, Bimber for small batches and single casks in re-charred and virgin oak, and Cotswolds for red wine casks. As with Scotch, English whisky must spend at least three years in wooden casks.

Buying English whisky

  • Batch and cask numbers: most releases are small, and each batch tastes different.
  • Strength: most bottles are over 46% ABV, and many single casks over 55%.
  • First releases: inaugural bottlings from new distilleries, such as Bimber's or Filey Bay's first editions, are sought after by collectors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there such a thing as English whisky?

Yes. English whisky is made in England from cereals, distilled there and aged at least three years in wooden casks. Production stopped around 1900 and restarted in 2006 at St. George’s Distillery in Norfolk. Today there are dozens of distilleries, including Bimber, The Lakes, Cotswolds and Spirit of Yorkshire.

What is Bimber whisky?

Bimber is a distillery in west London that makes single malt whisky in small batches, using direct-fired copper pot stills and long fermentations. Its releases are often single casks or small batches at high strength, aged in re-charred, virgin oak or sherry casks. Bimber has a strong following among collectors.

What is Filey Bay whisky?

Filey Bay is the single malt brand of Spirit of Yorkshire distillery at Hunmanby, near the Yorkshire coast. The distillery grows its own barley on the farm, malts it nearby and makes both peated and unpeated whisky. Filey Bay releases include a flagship and numbered limited editions.

What does English whisky taste like?

English whisky varies widely by distillery. Many are fruity and malty with vanilla from bourbon casks, while others use sherry, wine or virgin oak casks for richer flavours, and a few are peated. Most are young, so cask choice shapes the taste more than age.

Which was the first English whisky distillery?

St. George’s Distillery, home of The English Whisky Co. in Norfolk, is generally credited as the first modern English whisky distillery, starting production in 2006. Whisky had been made in England in the nineteenth century, but none was produced commercially for most of the twentieth century.
