French whisky on Glenbotal

The French section brings together whisky from all over the country: Hepp and Meyer from Alsace, Warenghem and Kornog from Brittany, Rozelieures from Lorraine, Castan from the south-west, Domaine des Hautes Glaces and Distillerie du Vercors from the Alps, and blenders and finishers such as Bellevoye, Brenne and Alfred Giraud. Single malts make up most of it, along with blended malts and some grain and buckwheat whiskies.

A whisky-drinking nation

France is one of the largest whisky markets in the world, but French production is recent. Warenghem in Brittany is usually credited with the first French single malt, Armorik, at the end of the 1990s. Since then the number of distilleries has risen to well over a hundred. Many began as brandy or liqueur producers and brought their own cask traditions to whisky.

Regional character

Brittany and Alsace are the oldest whisky regions in France. Producers often use French grain and French casks from wine, Cognac, Armagnac, Sauternes or vin jaune, which gives French whisky a distinct style. Distillerie des Menhirs makes Eddu from buckwheat, and Domaine des Hautes Glaces grows its own organic cereals in the Alps.

Label points

  • Grain: most French whisky is barley malt; buckwheat bottlings such as Eddu say so on the label.
  • Cask: Cognac and wine casks are common and named on the label.
  • Origin: some brands blend or finish whisky made elsewhere, so look for the distillery name if you want French-distilled spirit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does France make whisky?

Yes. France has well over a hundred whisky producers, mostly founded since the late 1990s, in regions such as Brittany, Alsace, Lorraine, the Alps and Cognac. Warenghem’s Armorik is usually considered the first French single malt. French whiskies often use French grain and wine or brandy casks.

What is Armorik whisky?

Armorik is a single malt whisky from Warenghem distillery in Lannion, Brittany. Launched at the end of the 1990s, it is generally credited as the first French single malt. It is made from malted barley and matured mainly in bourbon and sherry casks.

What is buckwheat whisky?

Buckwheat whisky is made from buckwheat, a seed traditionally grown in Brittany. Distillerie des Menhirs in Brittany makes Eddu, one of the best-known examples. It has a nutty, floral and slightly spicy flavour quite different from barley malt whisky.

Is Brenne a French whisky?

Brenne is a French single malt aged in new French Limousin oak and then finished in Cognac casks. It is distilled in the Cognac region from French barley, using Charentais pot stills of the kind traditionally used for Cognac. The result is fruity and floral with notes of banana and vanilla.

What is Bellevoye whisky?

Bellevoye is a French blended malt whisky that combines single malts from different regions of France. Its range includes versions named by colour, with different finishes such as wine or peated casks. It is one of the more widely available French whiskies.
