Campbeltown at Glenbotal

Campbeltown is a small region with a large following, and the section is dominated by Springbank and its sister whiskies Longrow and Hazelburn. Glen Scotia is the second largest name, then Glengyle, whose single malt is sold as Kilkerran. There are also Campbeltown Loch blends and blended malts from independent bottlers. Springbank 10, 15 and 18 year old releases appear across many bottling years, with limited local barley, cask strength and green-label editions.

From thirty distilleries to three

Campbeltown, on the Kintyre peninsula, once had around thirty distilleries and was known as the whisky capital of the world. Most closed in the early twentieth century, leaving Springbank (founded 1828) and Glen Scotia (1832). Glengyle reopened in 2004 under the owners of Springbank, bringing the count to three. Campbeltown whisky is often described as briny, oily and lightly smoky.

Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn

  • Springbank: lightly peated and distilled about two and a half times.
  • Longrow: heavily peated and double distilled.
  • Hazelburn: unpeated and triple distilled.

All three are made at Springbank, which malts all its own barley on traditional floor maltings and bottles on site. The company is still owned by the Mitchell family's J&A Mitchell.

Reading a Springbank label

Springbank releases its core ages in yearly batches, and the character changes between years, so collectors note the bottling year printed on the label or back label. Older bottles may be 75cl or 46% ABV, while many limited releases are at cask strength.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which distilleries are in Campbeltown?

Campbeltown has three working distilleries: Springbank, Glen Scotia and Glengyle. Springbank also produces the Longrow and Hazelburn single malts, and Glengyle’s whisky is sold under the name Kilkerran. Campbeltown is one of the five protected Scotch whisky regions.

What is the difference between Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn?

Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn are all made at Springbank distillery in Campbeltown. Springbank is lightly peated and distilled two and a half times, Longrow is heavily peated and distilled twice, and Hazelburn is unpeated and distilled three times.

Is Springbank 15 released every year?

Springbank 15 Year Old is released in yearly batches, usually in small quantities, and each year’s bottling differs slightly in its sherry and bourbon cask mix. Collectors often compare releases by year, such as the 2025 and 2026 bottlings. The bottling year appears on the label or back label.

Why is Glengyle whisky called Kilkerran?

Glengyle distillery in Campbeltown reopened in 2004, but the name Glengyle was already used for a blended malt by another company. Its single malt is therefore sold as Kilkerran, after the Gaelic name for the area. Independent bottlers sometimes label the same spirit Glengyle.

What does Campbeltown whisky taste like?

Campbeltown whisky is often described as briny and oily, with dried fruit, vanilla and a light coastal smoke. Springbank shows this style most clearly, while Glen Scotia is usually lighter and fruitier. Longrow is the region’s heavily peated option.
