A Midwinter Night's Dram is High West's annual port-finished rye, first released in 2013. This bottle is Act 9, the 2021 release, from Scene 4. In the distillery's Shakespeare-inspired naming, the Act is the annual release number and the Scene is the bottling run.
The base is High West's Rendezvous Rye, a blend of straight ryes: an MGP recipe of 95 per cent rye and the distillery's own 80 per cent rye, 20 per cent malted rye. It is finished in French oak barrels that previously held Ruby and Tawny Port. Bottled at 49.3% and non-chill-filtered, it pours a deep russet.
The nose brings muddled blackberries, poached figs and baking spice, the palate sugar plums, dates and brown sugar, and the finish aromatic bitters, pink peppercorn, violets and mint.
