Highland Park Dragon Legend is a smoky single malt from the distillery in Kirkwall, Orkney. It is matured in sherry-seasoned casks of European and American oak, which add vanilla and warm spice to the peat smoke. The peat comes from Hobbister Moor on Orkney.
The name draws on the Norse saga of Sigurd, who slew the dragon Fafnir and gained wisdom after tasting its blood. It is bottled at 43.1%, with its colour coming from the casks alone.
The nose combines freshly cut grass, toasted vanilla pods and a touch of mulled wine. On the palate, strong earthy, heathery smoke meets peppercorns, spiced fruit cake and oily malt. The finish is fairly short, with dried citrus and roasted barley.
