Aultmore Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located near Keith, Speyside, Scotland. It was founded in 1896 and is currently owned by Bacardi, through its John Dewar & Sons subsidiary. Long used almost exclusively as a component of Dewar's blended Scotch, Aultmore only began releasing an official age-stated single malt in 2004 and remains one of Speyside's lesser-known "hidden" distilleries despite substantial production capacity.
Aultmore was built in 1896 by Alexander Edward, a prolific distillery owner of the era who also held Benrinnes at the time, with production commencing in 1897. Sited on high ground above the Burn of Auchinderran outside Keith, in Banffshire, the distillery was originally powered by a waterwheel before converting to steam. It was expanded in 1898, but the collapse of whisky brokers Pattisons in 1899 hit the industry hard and forced Aultmore to close; it reopened around 1904. Production was again suspended during the First World War due to barley shortages.
Ownership passed to John Dewar & Sons in 1923, and the distillery came under the Distillers Company Limited (DCL) umbrella in 1925, later operating as part of DCL's Scottish Malt Distillers arm. The malting floors closed in 1968, and in 1970–71 the distillery was substantially rebuilt and re-equipped, with a second pair of stills added to bring the total to four. For most of the 20th century, Aultmore's output went almost entirely into blends, particularly Dewar's, with only rare official single malt bottlings.
In 1998, Bacardi acquired Dewar's and a package of associated distilleries — including Aultmore, Aberfeldy, Royal Brackla and Craigellachie — from Diageo, which had been required to divest them for competition reasons following its formation. Under Bacardi/John Dewar & Sons, Aultmore was given a proper core range for the first time, launched in 2014 as part of the "Last Great Malts of Scotland" series, and in 2021 the distillery marked its 125th anniversary with a multimillion-pound visitor and production expansion.
Aultmore's core range, introduced under the "Last Great Malts of Scotland" banner, is bottled non-chill filtered and at natural colour. It comprises the Aultmore 12 Year Old (46% ABV), Aultmore 18 Year Old, Aultmore 21 Year Old and Aultmore 25 Year Old, with occasional limited and cask-strength releases supplementing the standard line-up.
