Glenlossie Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located near Birnie, close to Elgin, in Speyside, Scotland. It was founded in 1876 and is currently owned by Diageo. Despite being one of Speyside's larger producers, Glenlossie is a classic "blender's malt" — the vast majority of its output goes into blends such as Haig, and only a small fraction is ever bottled as single malt.
Glenlossie was built in 1876 by John Duff, a whisky trade veteran who later went on to found Longmorn and helped establish Benriach. Duff developed the site with two partners, Alexander Grigor Allan and H.M.S. Mackay, choosing a location supplied by the Bardon Burn on the Mannochmore estate. For a period the distillery traded as "Glenlossie-Glenlivet," a naming convention common among Speyside distilleries of the era seeking to trade on the Glenlivet name.
In 1919 Glenlossie passed into the hands of the Distillers Company Limited (DCL), the forerunner of today's Diageo, and it has remained under that corporate lineage ever since. A serious fire destroyed part of the distillery in 1929, after which it was rebuilt, and like many Scottish distilleries it fell silent during both World Wars due to wartime restrictions on grain use. In 1962 the distillery was significantly expanded, with the still count rising from four to six. In 1971 a sister distillery, Mannochmore, was built on the same site, sharing the water source and some infrastructure with Glenlossie. The distillery's single malt remained almost entirely unbottled by its owner until 1990, when a 10-year-old expression was released as part of United Distillers' "Flora and Fauna" series, which showcased lesser-known distillery malts.
Only a small proportion of Glenlossie's production is bottled as single malt, with most output reserved for blends. The best-known official bottling is the Glenlossie 10 Year Old (43% ABV), released by United Distillers as part of the Flora and Fauna series — a sweet, lightly fruity, well-balanced Speyside malt with a dryish, gently malty finish. Beyond this, Glenlossie appears occasionally through independent bottlers and limited Diageo special releases.
