Mannochmore Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located near Thomshill, close to Elgin, in Speyside, Scotland. It was founded in 1971 and is currently owned by Diageo. It stands immediately next to its sister distillery, Glenlossie, with which it shares staff and a maturation site, and it is best known among collectors for the striking jet-black "Loch Dhu" single malt it produced in the 1990s.
Mannochmore was built in 1971 by John Haig & Co. (part of Distillers Company Ltd, the forerunner of Diageo) on land adjoining the existing Glenlossie distillery, two miles south of Elgin in the heart of Speyside. Like many distilleries of its era, it was constructed primarily to supply malt whisky for blending, and for its first two decades almost none of its output was bottled as a single malt.
Production was suspended between 1985 and 1989 amid a general downturn in the whisky industry, before the distillery reopened. In 1992, Diageo's predecessor released the first official Mannochmore single malt as part of the "Flora and Fauna" series, which showcased distilleries whose spirit had previously gone almost entirely into blends. A further short closure followed in 1995. In 1996 the distillery produced the unusual "Loch Dhu – The Black Whisky", a heavily caramel-coloured, near-black single malt that became something of a cult curiosity; it was discontinued in 1999. Mannochmore has operated with its own dedicated crew, working an alternating schedule alongside Glenlossie, and today the bulk of its make still goes into blended Scotch, with occasional single malt and independent bottlings released.
Mannochmore's principal official bottling is the Mannochmore 12 Year Old (Flora and Fauna series, 43% ABV), a light, fresh, floral Speyside malt matured in American oak casks. Official single malt releases from the distillery are rare, as the majority of its spirit is used for blending in labels such as Haig and Black & White; the discontinued "Loch Dhu – The Black Whisky" (1996–1999) remains its most famous, if atypical, single malt release. Independent bottlers occasionally release cask-strength Mannochmore expressions.
