This Ardbeg is a 22 year old single cask Islay malt, bottled by William Cadenhead, Scotland's oldest independent bottler. It was distilled in 1993, during the years between 1981 and 1996 when production at Ardbeg was minimal and infrequent. It was matured in a single Bourbon hogshead and bottled in July 2016 at a cask strength of 55.3% ABV. The outturn was 228 bottles.
The nose is smoky without being overpowering, with an underlying richness of smoked duck, cherries and light iodine. The palate is very peaty, with a hint of cooked fruit and raisins, then wood and a little spice. The finish carries big smoke, turns almost creamy, and ends dry but rich.
