Ardbeg Dark Cove is the limited edition released for Ardbeg Day 2016, bottled at 46.5% abv. It combines Ardbeg matured in ex-bourbon casks with a heart matured in dark sherry casks.
The name looks back to the cove where the distillery stands, once a haunt of smugglers who made spirit in a cave reached by rowing boat on moonlit nights.
The nose is earthy, meaty and spicy, with dark chocolate, molasses, orange, coffee and a little distant smoke. Pepper, lime zest, glowing charcoal, raisins, dates and ginger lead the palate, and the finish is long, spicy and rich with caramel and coffee.
