Ardbeg – Kelpie (46%)

Ardbeg Kelpie is an Islay single malt bottled at 46% ABV, a little less forceful than Ardbeg's Committee releases usually are, with a more maritime character. The nose is reserved at first, then gives way to peat, salty maritime notes and a layered bouquet of herbs, with seaweed-covered harbour timber, resin and buttery sweetness. The palate opens unexpectedly sweet before turning peppery and peaty, with cloves, very dark chocolate and freshly cut oak, drying to ash and a trace of fruit. The finish is oily and long, with smoke, tar, iodine and clove oil. It is best given a few minutes in the glass, as pepper dominates at first.
