Swedish whisky on Glenbotal

The Swedish section is led by Mackmyra, followed by Smögen, High Coast and Agitator, with the island distillery Spirit of Hven. Almost all of it is single malt, much of it young, peated and at high strength, and many bottles are 50cl. Limited releases and single casks make up a large part of the range.

The Swedish distilleries

  • Mackmyra, near Gävle, was founded in 1999 and was Sweden's first malt whisky distillery. It is known for Swedish oak casks and later built a gravity distillery.
  • Smögen, on the west coast, makes heavily peated single malt in small quantities and has a strong following among peat lovers.
  • High Coast, formerly Box Destilleri, is in Ångermanland in the north and makes clean, often smoky malts.
  • Spirit of Hven is on the island of Hven in the Öresund strait between Sweden and Denmark.
  • Agitator, at Arboga, experiments with different distillation and cask methods.

Cold climate, small casks

Sweden's long winters and short, warm summers create large temperature swings, which push spirit in and out of the wood. Distillers often use smaller casks, and Swedish oak, which is tight-grained and spicy, is a recognisable feature. Some producers dry malt with local peat, juniper or birch rather than Scottish peat. Swedish whisky follows the European rule of at least three years in wood.

Before buying

Many releases come in 50cl bottles and at cask strength, so check size and ABV when comparing. Batch numbers and cask types are usually printed on the label, and early or first editions are collected in their own right.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Sweden make whisky?

Yes. Sweden has a small but well-regarded whisky industry, started by Mackmyra in 1999. Other distilleries include Smögen, High Coast, Agitator and Spirit of Hven. Most make single malt, often peated, and use Swedish oak or small casks.

What is Mackmyra whisky?

Mackmyra is a single malt whisky from Sweden, near Gävle, founded in 1999 as the country’s first malt whisky distillery. It is known for using Swedish oak casks and local ingredients, and some releases are smoked with juniper and peat. Mackmyra has released many limited seasonal editions.

What is Smögen whisky?

Smögen is a small whisky distillery on Sweden’s west coast that makes heavily peated single malt. It produces small batches and single casks, usually at cask strength, and is rated highly by fans of smoky whisky. Many releases come in 50cl bottles.

What does Swedish oak add to whisky?

Swedish oak is a slow-growing, tight-grained European oak. Casks made from it give whisky spicy, woody and sometimes resinous notes, often stronger than American oak. Swedish distilleries such as Mackmyra use it for full maturation or for finishing.

What is High Coast whisky?

High Coast is a whisky distillery in Ångermanland, northern Sweden, formerly called Box Destilleri. It makes both peated and unpeated single malts with a clean, fruity style. Its name comes from the High Coast area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
