Basil Hayden Dark Rye is a blended rye whiskey from the Basil Hayden brand, part of Beam Suntory's Small Batch Collection. It combines Kentucky straight rye with Canadian rye from Alberta Distillery and a splash of California port.
The port is blended straight into the whiskey rather than used as a barrel finish. It is bottled at 80 proof (40%) in a 750ml bottle.
The nose has strawberry jam, dark cherry, oaky spice and molasses. The palate is fruit-driven, with plum, black cherry and currant, then rye spice, caramel and light oak. The finish is smooth, with dried fruit, caramel and a touch of dry leather.
