Basil Hayden's Rye is a Kentucky straight rye whiskey, bottled at 40% in a 750ml bottle. It is made at the Jim Beam distillery in Clermont and sits within the Jim Beam Small Batch Collection.
It starts with a four-year-old rye, which is aged for a further seven years in newly charred quarter-cask oak barrels and then blended with straight rye whiskey. The brand takes its name from Meredith Basil Hayden Sr., a late-18th-century distiller who used a high proportion of rye in his mash.
The nose has rye spice, black pepper, vanilla and toasted oak. The palate is gently sweet, with honeyed vanilla, cinnamon and oak tannins, and the finish is medium, with dry oak spice and a trace of caramel.
