The Lightning is a Kentucky straight rye from Blackened, the whiskey brand co-founded by Metallica. This 2022 edition is bottled at 45% ABV and blends ryes aged between five and eight years.
The blend was finished for two to fourteen weeks each in Madeira wine casks and Caribbean rum casks. During the finish the barrels went through Blackened's Black Noise process, which aims low-frequency Metallica recordings at them; here it was the live 2012 performance of Ride the Lightning.
Cinnamon and pepper spice sit over nutty, dried-fruit Madeira character and the molasses sweetness of the rum casks, and the finish is warm and rounded.
