Blue Run High Rye is a Kentucky straight bourbon bottled at 55.5%. The mash bill is 65% corn, 30% rye and 5% malted barley, and the whiskey was aged for a minimum of four years in new American oak with a number 4 alligator char.
It was the first Blue Run release distilled under Jim Rutledge, formerly of Four Roses, at Castle & Key Distillery. The original bottling drew on 100 selected barrels.
The nose offers baking spice, nutmeg, caramel, honey, graham cracker, black cherries and dark plums with a hint of anise. The palate brings black tea, syrupy sweetness, soft caramel, light toast and ginger. The finish is fairly long, as black pepper and char build, with black tea and sweetness lingering.
